Carolina NA-YGN Chapter Explosion

The Carolina chapter of NA-YGN exploded onto the scene in 2005 and has been fissioning at full power every since! Initially fueled by 11 hard-working core members, the chapter has successfully grown to approximately 100 members!

The foundation of our chapter was built upon energetic and motivated members. At the NA-YGN Professional Development meeting in Washington, DC this past May, the Carolina Chapter was able to send 8 members. During the conference we networked with 130 young professionals from various demographics within the nuclear field. The meeting allowed our chapter to gain insight that helped us in our activities and the formation of our chapter.

The Carolina chapter consists of four different company sites (McGuire, General Office, Catawba, and Oconee), and each site held an introduction meeting to kick-off NA-YGN this past June. In August we held a company wide kick-off meeting at Jillians restaurant in downtown Charlotte. We had lunch and a keynote speaker, Mr. Jim Morris Duke Power –VP Nuclear Support, spoke about the importance of professional development. The speaker was followed by an ice breaker, “The Mingling Game”, to allow people from the various sites to meet and greet one another. The event concluded with a fun social.

Since our kick-offs we have been going strong in our involvement. Our activities include;

  • Making posters for the pro-nuclear rally in Mississippi for Entergy’s Early Site Permit hearing.
  • Joining the Midlands YGN for a barbeque in the park-GREAT COOKOUT!
  • Joining with Women in Nuclear (WIN) to host a “lunch and learn” with speaker Undine Shoop from the NRC in September. She spoke about the various functions of the NRC, new plants and the differences between Early Site Permits and combined construction and operating licenses (COL).
  • The Oconee plant held a social at the University of Clemson home-football game and each plant holds a monthly social.
  • Holding elections for the various functions of our new organization:

President - Thad Wingo
VP - Melissa Moran
Treasurer - Matt Welch
Secretary - Andrew James
P.I. Chair -  Desmond Beatty
P.D. Chair - Carena Tate
Comm. Chair - Sarah Zetts

  • Our chapter sent 2 members to the NA-YGN Professional Development function / ANS winter meeting in DC.
  • Co-sponsoring a “lunch and learn” with WIN, on the topic of Energy and Prosperity with speaker David J. Hill-Deputy Lab. Director of Science and Technology at the Idaho National Lab.
  • Hosting a Carolina NA-YGN wide function at a Charlotte Bobcats basketball game in December.
  • Our chapter sent two members to assist the NEI at the UN climate control meeting at the end of November/early December in Canada.

With such a great first year behind us, we look forward to an electrifying year in 2006! Our future plans include a site-wide Professional Development Seminar in late February and the implementation of a coaching program. The coaching program is designed to allow members to develop a relationship with managers from different sites. Each member will have the opportunity to pair up with a manger and obtain corporate knowledge of our company. More to come… LOOK FOR US AT THE CONFERENCES!
