Carolina NA-YGN 2006 Year End Executive Summary

Carolina NA-YGN has been an active, evolving, and positive organization in the year 2006 NA-YGN membership has grown by 30% to over 100 young professionals that believe nuclear energy is an exciting and growing career opportunity at Duke. The following article is an Executive Summary covering the chapter’s accomplishments in 2006.

The Council has continued to lay the foundation for the organization by developing the administrative framework of this new organization. Bylaws and processes have been developed and implemented for Council elections, budget management, and defining organizational roles and responsibilities. Site representatives have worked to keep people involved and active in the organization. Our four site event in the spring provided us with ideas and energy to carry out our goals, and four members attended the NA-YGN Professional Development Workshop with over 100 fellow NA-YGN members from all across North America.

The Public Information Committee has visited local schools to speak with students about the science of making electricity using nuclear fuel. Our members have also been active spokespeople for nuclear energy; attending four public meetings in 2006 and providing quotes and letters to area media. NA-YGN members have been on television, in the newspaper, and developed fact sheets supporting nuclear science.

The Professional Development Committee has organized and attended professional development training for public speaking, industry networking, and career development. Most importantly the PD Committee launched the NA-YGN Coaching Program, “Bridge the Divide.” This cornerstone program unites members with managers across the entire organization in a mentoring relationship aimed at forming strong relationships so that mentor and mentee both gain insight into each other’s roles in Duke Energy.

Overall this has been an exciting and fruitful year. Being the first full year as a newly formed organization, there have been many challenges. However, the leaders on the council, with the help of many active members, have worked hard to provide continuity and to continue to move the organization forward towards 2007.
