YGN Judges and Presents an Award at the 2007 Regional Science Fair

UPDATE: Carolina YGN’s Excellence in Energy Awards were featured in the School Notes section of the Charlotte Observer.

4 students earn energy awards
The Carolina chapter of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NA-YGN) presented four Excellence in Energy Awards at the 2007 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Regional Science Fair, held Feb. 24.  The awards are given to students whose projects exemplify energy efficiency, electricity generation and technology, or nuclear science and technology.  Winners are: Duncan Anderson of Statesville Road Elementary School for his project, “Pencil Resistors,” in the Elementary Division; Alex Hardy of South Lake Christian Academy for “Which Brand of Batteries Last the Longest?” in the Junior Division; and Bobby Lee of Merlin Middle School and David McKee of Stillwater Academy for “Building a Heat Engine: Converting Thermal Energy into Kinetic Energy” in the Junior Division.

Working in the Nuclear Industry Colloquium

The March 2nd “Working in the Nuclear Industry Colloquium” was a big step in the right direction for NA-YGN. It was one of the 1st events at the university level that included so many different organizations. The event brought together NA-YGN members from the Midlands Chapter and the Carolinas Chapter as well as ANS, NEI, and the student chapter of ASCE. Members represented a broad range of the nuclear industry, from utilities such as SCE&G & Duke Energy to government agencies such as SRS and Washington Group to vendors such as Westinghouse.
