It has been a busy past couple of weeks for YGN PI members. Janelle Penisten and Sarah Chisholm wrote Letters to the Editor on a recent opinion article in the Charlotte Observer by Rep. Harrison. Janelle also wrote a Letter to the Editor to the Aspen Daily News. Click the link below to read these responses.
Renewable energy, nuclear aren’t either/or
The writer represents the Carolina Chapter, North American Young Generation in Nuclear.
In response to Rep. Pricey Harrison’s “Invest in renewable energy” (June 12 Viewpoint):
As a nuclear engineer I favor building new nuclear power plants, but I also support expanding renewable energy. It was my father, who has worked most of his life in environmental jobs and has a degree in environmental science, who introduced me to the nuclear industry.
The nuclear industry hires far more than just engineers and management. A nuclear plant requires welders, nurses, scuba divers, technicians — just to name a few. Utilities in the Carolinas are working with local colleges and trade schools to train the next generation of nuclear workers. Nuclear plants are also typically located in low population areas, and their construction and operation benefit local economies.

Energy independence requires more nuclear
In response to “Invest in renewable energy” (June 12 Viewpoint):We must acknowledge the role of nuclear energy in our future electricity needs. Fossil fuels generate over 70 percent of the country’s electricity. Nuclear generates another 20 percent. And solar still accounts for less than one-tenth of 1 percent!
Meanwhile, worldwide demand is expected to double by 2025. As climate change looms, we are obligated to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels with an alternative as clean and efficient as possible. This means we need every bit of nuclear energy we can get.
Yes, Rep. Pricey Harrison — North Carolina should take the lead in energy independence. The first step is the construction and licensing of two new nuclear power plants in the state.
