Carolina NA-YGN recently sent a member to the 2007 American Nuclear Society Winter Conference. For this conference, “Making the Renaissance Real”, nuclear professionals from around the country met (November 11th-17th) in Washington, D.C. Lectures hinged upon the theme of the current revival of interest in nuclear power as the cleanest, most cost effective answer to our nation’s energy needs. In the run-up to the week’s events, the ANS YMG (Young Members Group) partnered with NA-YGN to present the Young Professionals Congress, a series of lectures examining many of the challenges of today’s nuclear industry with a particular focus on the young professionals’ roles and the opportunities they are likely to have over the course of their careers.
Peter Lyons, Commissioner of the NRC, discussed the, “Importance of Communications Today” and the responsibility of his organization to do this in such a way that the public gains confidence in the nuclear industry, paving the way for the ‘nuclear renaissance’. The importance of industrial awareness was presented by Marvin S. Fertel, Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute. Again, this lecture focused on a message of nuclear energy’s advantages and familiarizing the public with these facts. Other topics discussed were Knowledge Transfer, Employee Retention, and Leadership.
As an added bonus, the young professionals present were given opportunities to discuss and network with their more experienced colleagues as well as one another, both at the conference and in an organized mixer. If you see how you may benefit from a similar opportunity, talk to your NA-YGN site representative today about upcoming ANS or NA-YGN conferences.
